Emiliano Martinez missing from Arsenal squad because keeper is having medical

Emiliano Martinez was reportedly left out of Arsenal’s squad today in order to have a medical at Aston Villa.

Martinez impressed in goal for the Gunners at the end of last season with regular keeper Bernd Leno having been ruled out through injury.

But the German has regained his No. 1 spot for the Gunners with Martinez now looking for somewhere to play regular football.

He missed out as Arsenal beat Fulham 3-0 in the opening weekend of the Premier League season, but could now feature in the league next week for Dean Smith's side.

The Telegraph’s John Percy tweeted: “Emiliano Martinez is having his medical at #avfc this afternoon. Deal worth around £20m agreed with Arsenal. Martinez set to start Premier League opener against Sheff Utd.”

Martinez’s agent has explained why the shot-stopper is desperate to be featuring regularly, for whatever club.

“The most likely scenario is that Emi Martinez leaves Arsenal because he wants to play,” agent Lucas Martinez Quarta told TyC Sports.

“He dreams of being the starting goalkeeper for the national team and he is willing to leave his home [at Arsenal] for the worthy cause of being Argentina’s number one.”

Brighton are also believed to have been interested in Argentine Martinez, who helped the Gunners win the FA Cup last season.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had said: “I cannot stop all the speculation that we have about all our players coming in and out.
