Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti will prioritise signing a ‘world class’ centre-back in the summer in the hope he can have an impact like Virgil van Dijk did at Liverpool, according to reports. Van Dijk joined Liverpool in January 2018 and led the Reds to the Champions League final the same season. The Dutchman then won the competition a year later before playing a huge role in Anfield club’s first top-flight title in 30 years.

Ancelotti has led Everton to seventh in the Premier League table in his first full campaign in charge of the Toffees.

The Merseysiders have an outside chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Ancelotti has a number of central defenders available to him in his first-team squad.

Michael Keane, Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina all cost the club north of £20million.

Mason Holgate has also impressed at times when given the opportunity.

However, Football Insider says Ancelotti is not satisfied with the crop of defenders he has.

The report says the Italian is keen to bring in a top centre-back in the close season.

Ancelotti wants the player to have a similar impact to that of Van Dijk, or Ruben Dias at Manchester City.

Everton spent big on the likes of Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Godfrey last summer.

But Ancelotti is set to be given another large warchest by owner Farhad Moshiri of over £100m.

Ancelotti is aiming to end Everton’s 26-year wait for a trophy this season.

His side host Manchester City in the quarter-final of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Ancelotti has outlined how he wants his team to play to give them the best chance of causing an upset at Goodison Park

“Every team has its own characteristics and Manchester City are fantastic with the ball, really good in possession and with a lot of ability one-on-one,” said Ancelotti.

“It is really difficult to compete there – but we can compete with a good attitude and spirit, with strong concentration defensively and trying to play efficiently when we have the ball.

“Also, using set-pieces, where we are strong.

“We have to compete but not with their characteristics… with our characteristics, we can compete – above all, in a knockout.

“This competition is a big motivation, we are not so far [from the final], we had a really exciting game against Tottenham and we are going to have an exciting and difficult game this weekend.

“The desire is really big and I hope this desire can help us have more motivation and more spirit.”
