Fans question RB Leipzig's Nordi Mukiele after 'comical' own goal

‘What was he thinking??’: Fans question RB Leipzig defender Nordi Mukiele’s decision-making after ‘comical’ own goal gave Manchester City the lead in Champions League tie

  • Manchester City overcame RB Leipzig 6-3 in a nine-goal stunner at the Etihad
  • The German side were not helped by Nordi Mukiele’s unfortunate intervention
  • Under little pressure, he headed Kevin De Bruyne’s fine cross into his own net

Fans have reacted with incredulity after Nordi Mukiele’s ‘comical’ own goal for RB Leipzig in their 6-3 loss against Manchester City.

The German side came out on the wrong end of a nine-goal thriller in the Champions League at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

Christopher Nkunku scored a hat-trick for Jesse Marsch’s visiting side but they were undone by goals from Nathan Ake, Riyad Mahrez, Jack Grealish, Joao Cancelo, Gabriel Jesus, and the French defender’s bizarre intervention.

The 23-year-old’s mistake hampered his side’s efforts to win at the Etihad on Wednesday night

After good work from Kevin De Bruyne to escape several surrounding players, he bent in a teasing cross from the right hand side.

However, despite being under no intense or direct pressure, the 23-year-old – perhaps caught between heading it out for a corner or directing it back to goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi – stooped and nodded the loose ball into his own net.

And supporters were quick to take to social media to question his decision-making.

A fan posted: ‘Manchester City 2-0 ahead against RB Leipzig the second is a dreadful own goal from Nordi Mukiele I’ve absolutely no idea what he was trying to do, awful defending the Bundesliga side have gifted City a second comical own goal’.

A fifth posted a picture of The Simpsons character Ralph Wiggum diving through a window, comparing his fall to Mukiele’s.
