Fans spot awkwardness between Mourinho, Mkhitaryan and Smalling in Roma training

Jose Mourinho has been reunited with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Chris Smalling after taking charge at AS Roma.

Mourinho worked with the pair during his time as Manchester United manager and they both came in for criticism from the Special One.

In November 2017, Mourinho slammed Mkhitaryan for "disappearing", saying: "I was not happy with his last performances.

"I’m not speaking about one or two, I’m speaking about three, four or five. He started the season very well and after that, step by step, he was disappearing."

Meanwhile, Smalling was criticised for his ability on the ball, with Mourinho saying after the Europa League final win over Ajax: "I even joked with Smalling, 'With your feet, we're for sure not playing out from the back!'"

Both Mkhitaryan and Smalling have impressed during their time at Roma and the club will be looking to build on last season's seventh place finish with Mourinho now in charge.

However, fans have been quick to highlight Mourinho's past with Mkhitaryan and Smalling after the 58-year-old posted a picture on Instagram with the pair stood near him in training.

Mourinho captioned the picture: "Football is a small world"

In response, one fan wrote: "Feeling sorry for mkhitaryan and smalling, look at their faces"

"Mhiki n smalling are like S*** he’s back lol", joked another.

"Miki and Smalling are having a déjà vu!" added a third.

Speaking last year, Mkhitarayan opened up about his relationship with Mourinho in an interview with Yevgeny Savin, saying: "Once Mourinho saw me at breakfast and said to me: ‘Because of you, the press criticises me'. I replied: ‘Really, mister? I’m not doing it on purpose'".

However, Mkhitaryan agreed a new deal with Roma a month after Mourinho's appointment was confirmed and a report from Corriere dello Sport claims the pair have reconciled and even 'joked about what happened'.

Smalling is also said to be happy to stay at Roma with Mourinho in charge, with reports stating that he has no intention of leaving the club, despite links with a move away.
