Frank Lampard explains how Chelsea beat Liverpool to Timo Werner transfer

Chelsea have already got one over bitter rivals Liverpool – by snatching Timo Werner in the summer window.

The German striker was set to join the Reds until Frank Lampard’s Blues entered the race and landed him for £50million.

Lampard admits beating Jurgen Klopp to long-time Anfield target Werner was immensely satisfying.

The Chelsea manager, who fell out with Klopp during a touchline row at the end of last season, said: “When it's competition from the likes of Liverpool or Man City, you need to state your best case to the player.

“You have to try to sell the club, sell how you want the club to move forward. I do that to the best of my ability when speaking to players.

“With Timo, we were very, very keen to bring him in. And he needs to feel that from us. I loved everything that he said to me in those conversations.”

Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and Hakim Ziyech have since followed Werner to SW6.
