Mason Mount has grown ‘frustrated’ and is feeling ‘under appreciated’ at Chelsea because of his treatment compared to other high-profile stars at the club.

The midfielder, who has been at Stamford Bridge since he was just six years old, believes he is still being treated as a youth team player in comparison to mega-money stars brought into the club in recent years.

And the Daily Star Sunday understands if the England midfielder’s issues can’t be settled, then ultimately he would be prepared to leave.

A source close to the player said: “Mason is a top lad and thought of well within Chelsea, and is popular with the team. But he isn’t feeling appreciated anymore.

“He’s been at Chelsea since he was a tiny lad, but despite coming up through the Academy, he doesn’t feel like he gets the same treatment or recognition as players bought in for big money.”

Mount and Chelsea opened contract talks in September, even though he still has nearly three years left to run on the deal he signed on his return from a loan spell at Derby in 2019.

His current contract, worth £75k a week, makes him one of the lowest earners at Chelsea, with reports that a new deal would see him double his weekly wage.

And after he netted a hat-trick for Chelsea against Norwich on October 23 all seemed to be going well, but since then he had played just 28 minutes for Thomas Tuchel’s side before yesterday’s game at Leicester.

Mount came on for the final 23 minutes of a Carabao Cup clash against Southampton before being left out of the matchday squads for Premier League and Champions League games against Newcastle and Malmo respectively due to illness.

He then returned to the bench against Burnley and was brought on for the last five minutes at Turf Moor.

Mount has spoken highly of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the past, admitting he watched them lift the title and has even said he looked forward to playing at Anfield in front of the fans.

He said: “I spoke to a couple of the boys about playing there and they say it is unbelievable.”

The source added: “He is torn because he loves the club and the fans, but thinks it’s time for him to leave to step up his career. And where better to do that than Liverpool?”
