Gareth Southgate addresses Harry Maguire’s England recall chances

England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed he will recall Harry Maguire to his squad when the next international break comes around.

Southgate was forced to drop Maguire after he was found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated attempts of bribery following an incident with police during a holiday on the Greek island of Mykonos.

Southgate had included the Manchester United captain in his squad for the Nations League games in Iceland and Denmark – but was then forced to axe him once the court's decision became public.

Maguire, 27, has appealed the guilty verdict and faces a new trial in the near future when he will attempt to clear his name.

The Three Lions will meet up again in October for another round of games and Southgate, who has been in constant contact with Maguire, insists the defender will be part of his plans then.

He said: "We have been in touch right the way through. It's clearly been a really difficult period for him.

"The last few days have been important for him to get away and have a rest. We will absolutely look to get him involved in October."

England captain Harry Kane, meanwhile, has revealed the squad held a meeting at St George's Park to discuss them taking a knee before the Iceland game tomorrow night.

Kane insists it is important for the players to support the Black Lives Matter movement, and he said: "It's important to us as a nation, a team and a staff, to be on the same page.
