Gareth Southgate opens up on how England dressing room reacted to Joe Gomez being booed

England players were “disappointed” with the boos Joe Gomez received as he was substituted on against Montenegro on Thursday night.

The Three Lions qualified for Euro 2020 with a thumping 7-0 victory over their error-prone opponents but the senior team’s 1000th game was marred by the treatment of Gomez as Southgate brought him on.

Quarters of the Wembley crowd proceeded to boo the player following a spat he had with Raheem Sterling at St George’s Park on Monday, which resulted in Sterling being dropped from the matchday squad.

Sterling reignited the confrontation the pair had the preceding afternoon as Manchester City lost 3-1 at Liverpool, and left Gomez with a scratch around his eye.

But the 24-year-old said the matter, for which he took the blame, was resolved that same day and the duo had moved on.

“The whole dressing room are disappointed with it,” Southgate said in response to the boos.

“They are tight. Every single one of them. The players are united.

“Joe had done absolutely nothing wrong. No England player should ever be booed when they’re wearing the shirt. Ever. I don’t get it.

“I’m hugely disappointed for him, but he’s got the support of all of us – the whole dressing room, totally united. And we’ll make sure we’re there for him.”

Sterling watched on from the stands as his team-mate entered the pitch, breaking into applause for the defender.

The Manchester City forward also lambasted the behaviour of some fans on social media after the game.

“To all the @England fans, I wanted to leave things at it was but tonight I have to speak again,” he tweeted.

“I was hard for me to see my team-mate get booed for something that was my fault.

“Joe hasn’t done anything wrong & for me to see someone who keeps his head down and work hard especially after a difficult week for him to be booed when he came on tonight was wrong.

“I’ve taken full responsibility and accepted the consequence. I felt as though I had to say this get home safe everyone.”
