A Brazilian goalkeeper who 'fed his lover to his dogs' has sparked outrage by posing with a pit bull in a post on his Instagram account.
Bruno Fernandes de Souza, or Bruno as he is known, was convicted of killing model Eliza Samudio in 2013 and was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder, which occurred in 2010.
Bruno had his contract at Flamengo terminated as a result of his crime and had reportedly ended his relationship with Samudio when she told him she was pregnant and refused to have an abortion.
He also spent time with Atletico Mineiro and Corinthians during his playing career.
Samudio's body was never found and her baby was discovered with Bruno’s associates in a slum in the city of Ribeirao das Neves, on the outskirts of Belo Horizonte.
According to the police, Bruno's cousin said Samudio's body was chopped up and some parts were buried under concrete and others were fed to dogs.
Bruno admitted to organising the plot, but the allegation of using dogs to rip the woman’s body apart was never confirmed by the authorities.
The goalkeeper has been serving his time in a ‘semi-open’ prison regime since July 2019.
He was initially meant to return to Varginha Prison at night, however, inadequate facilities to accommodate prisoners coming and going led to him being kept under house arrest instead.
On November 17, Bruno posted a photo of himself posing with a pit bull on Instagram, where he has nearly 90,000 followers.
He accompanied the snap with the message: “Loyal friend!”
One fan stated in the comments section that "pit bulls kill and eat human meat", prompting Bruno's current wife, Ingrid Calheiros, to reply: “She is an American bully! And it all depends on the upbringing, here everyone is raised with a lot of love. No dog eats human flesh; it's a myth, it doesn't exist!"
Other fans mocked the convicted goalie with comments such as “what kind of meat does this dog eat?” Another read: “is that the one that ate the remains?”
