Saido Berahino found himself back on the scoresheet in England with a goal against Shrewsbury Town on his debut for Sheffield Wednesday.
From being lauded as one of England’s next biggest generational talents while playing at West Brom, to a rapid decline in which everything appeared to fall away and fall into obscurity for the Burundian.
Now we take a look at what the now-28-year-old has been up to since he left the country two years ago.
It was the 2014/15 season in which Berahino truly made his mark – scoring 20 goals in all competitions for West Brom.
However, the subsequent campaign saw the young talent score only seven goals across all campaigns.
The season after that, he only featured on five occasions and failed to register a single goal.
Seasons in the lower leagues followed on, with loans to Northampton Town, Brentford, and Peterborough United, all of which again yielded tepid results for the player.
Berahino’s form just did not match the glowing, clinical forward-man he once was, while some news articles detailing his wild personal life overshadowed the player.
Berahino was offered a chance of redemption at Stoke City in 2016. But three seasons, fifty-odd games, and just five goals later, Berahino was sold to Zulte Waregem three years later, an outfit in Belgium’s fast-rising Pro League.

10 goals in 34 games was a slight improvement, but Berahino struggled for game-time. He was then shipped to Waregem’s league rivals Charleroi on loan last season – but again, the goals did not come, the player only mustering a tally of two during the campaign.
Indeed, this summer Wednesday managed to tie down the player on a permanent contract, right on deadline day, with the forward signing for an undisclosed fee.
And in League One, Berahino made his first appearance for the Owls against Shrewsbury Town, scoring within just six minutes, tapping in following a corner. It’s his first goal in English football since December 2018 – and many are now asking if he can rekindle the form he showed over five years ago.
