Jermain Defoe celebrates 40th birthday with heartwarming gesture for 100 kids

Jermain Defoe has marked his 40th birthday with a heartwarming gesture for 100 kids.

The former Tottenham and England striker reaches the landmark age on Friday (October 7). But he won't just be receiving gifts, as he's giving away too.

Defoe took to Instagram after visiting Cut Above The Rest barbers in Barking, East London, to announce that he's pre-paid for 100 haircuts for children under the age of 16.

Speaking on his story to his 563k followers, he said: "Hi guys it’s JD, I’ve just had a fresh trim as it’s my birthday tomorrow, the big 4-0.

"So what I’m doing for all the youngsters that wanna get a fresh trim tomorrow, leave your wallets at home, come down, the first 100 trims are on me tomorrow!

Defoe has long been carrying out charity work through his Jermain Defoe Foundation, which he set up in 2013. He memorably struck up a heartwarming friendship with the late Sunderland fan Bradley Lowery.

It was for his charitable efforts that he received an OBE in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours. Having hung up his boots in March, Defoe is now an academy coach with Spurs and also acts as a club ambassador.

The lucky 100 children aged under 16 who can benefit from his generosity will need to head down to Cut Above The Rest at 339 Barking Road, E6 1LA on Friday.
