Joleon Lescott heaps praise on 'unique' Manchester City star Ederson

‘He WILL go down as a great’: Joleon Lescott heaps praise on ‘unique’ Manchester City star Ederson – as the Brazilian closes in on equalling Peter Schmeichel’s goalkeeper Premier League title record

  • Joleon Lescott called Ederson unique as a modern goalkeeper for his ability
  • The Brazilian has won four Premier League titles since joining Man City in 2017
  • Peter Schmeichel’s five Premier League wins is current record for a goalkeeper

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has won praise for his ‘unique ability’ as he closes in on equalling Peter Schmeichel’s record five Premier League titles for a goalkeeper.

Ederson has revolutionised the position since he signed for Pep Guardiola in 2017 and former City defender Joleon Lescott, who won two league titles at The Etihad in front of Joe Hart, says the Brazilian will go down as a great.

‘I don’t think the number of Premier League titles alone determines whether you are the best but when all is said and done, I think he will go down as a great,’ said Lescott.

‘The way the modern game is played, I think he is unique in his ability, in possession and his calmness.

‘That will be a factor to why he’s regarded as one of the best. If it’s ‘the’ best, who knows.’

Guardiola was questioned when he bombed out Hart and initially brought in Claudio Bravo for a season before settling on Ederson.

‘The way Pep wants to play is different to, say, Joe’s strengths,’ added Lescott.

‘Joe’s a great friend of mine, but yeah, different styles obviously mean different outcomes for different players.

‘I was lucky enough to play with a lot of keepers I could trust. Tim Howard, Matt Murray, Joe Hart, to name a few of the club ones.

‘We would try to review situations. There is a kind of beauty in having partnerships on the pitch with good goalkeepers.’

Ederson is currently level with Petr Cech on four Premier League titles but will add another should City win three of their remaining four games, starting at Everton on Sunday.

Should City win the league this year, Ederson will tie Peter Schmeichel’s record for the most Premier League titles won by a goalkeeper
