Klopp voices dismay over Premier League rule change for new season

Jurgen Klopp says the Premier League are risking players' welfare by reverting back to a maximum of three substitutions per game in the new season.

Teams were allowed to make five changes when football returned during the coronavirus crisis in June, with clubs allowed to name nine substitutes on the bench and introduce five players across three separate windows.

But clubs nearer the foot of the table are said to have been unhappy with this, feeling that it gave the bigger clubs with greater strength in depth an even broader advantage as they could bring on more fresh legs and higher quality players.

A vote to keep the five substitutes rule was put forward to the clubs, but it failed to pass.

Klopp isn't happy about that, and says it will place greater pressure on his Liverpool players.

When discussing the Premier League champions' start to the new season on Friday, he said: "Starts with Leeds then Chelsea, Arsenal, so on.

"The biggest challenge is about pressing a normal season into a shorter period. A proper challenge. Especially with the three [subs].

"This is only about player welfare by the way. Not sure why we have to discuss this. It will be difficult.

"I thought from a common sense point of view, of course it would be clear we will have 20 [in the matchday squad] and five [subs].

"It's not an advantage, I don't like that we deal with this thing around the wrong facts.

"It's about players' welfare and highest quality in games for all teams.

"Look at the other countries, Bayern have the best team and have an advantage with the five subs but they play the most games.

"Now it is 18 [in the matchday squad] and three [subs can come on], so you have to rotate more, you need numbers and fit players. That is the job we have to do. We have make the decisions."
