Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been backed to replace under-fire Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the club’s captain. Aubameyang was left out of the Arsenal squad for Saturday’s 3-0 win over Southampton at the Emirates. Mikel Arteta claimed the striker was absent after a disciplinary breach.

Aubameyang is reported to have arrived back late from a permitted trip abroad last week.

His late return threatened Covid-19 protocols and Arteta saw fit to punish his skipper.

Aubameyang has been under pressure for his performances on the pitch this season, failing to score in his last six appearances.

But it is now his off-pitch antics which have got him in trouble.

Radio and TV presenter Laura Woods, who is an Arsenal supporter, says Arteta has been let down by Aubameyang.

Woods reckons Arteta has no other option but to take the armband off the Gabon international.

“I think everyone’s quite disappointed about it when the news came out,” Woods said on talkSPORT.

“Luckily Arsenal won that game, so in hindsight it doesn’t feel as important as it could have done.

“They have their strict [Covid] rules and those are the rules that everybody else has to abide by, so I don’t understand why Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doesn’t abide by them or doesn’t feel like he needs to.

“He was photographed getting a tattoo the night before. So yeah, if I was Mikel Arteta I would be so let down by him.

“That’s my captain, you’ve got to set an example to the team, to the younger members of the team who have been pulling Arsenal up all season, those younger members who seem to have a better disciplinary record than your captain.

“Yeah I’d strip him, I’ll be honest, yeah I would. I don’t see how they can’t.”

Woods reckons summer signing Ramsdale would be a great replacement for Aubameyang.

Ramsdale joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in the summer for a fee that could rise to £30million.

The 23-year-old has proven his many doubters wrong and Woods reckons he would thrive as captain.

“I bet he wouldn’t feel like it was too soon,” Woods added. “I bet if you gave it to him he would absolutely love it.

“And you know what, he would probably be really good at it.

“I don’t know what it really takes in terms of in that dressing room to be a captain because I’ve never been in one of those dressing rooms but I have to say I think he’s incredible.

“I love his spirit, I love all his reactions to the goals, I love all his reactions to making saves.

“I just think he’s a brilliant captain, I think they’ve been crying out for him.

“I’m really glad as well because at the beginning of the season there were a lot of mentions of how much he cost but he’s absolutely blown that out of the water.”
