Leeds keeper Meslier suffers howler for France U21 gifting goal to Faroe Islands

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier suffered a howler on international duty for France U21 that gave Faroe Islands U21 a shock point.

The young French side is just as stacked as their senior squad and the starting XI for the match featured Real Madrid's Transfer Deadline Day signing Eduardo Camavinga.

As was expected, they dominated the opening 45 minutes of the match, scoring early on and squandering several other chances as they took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Meslier was barely involved in the one-way traffic and was yet to face at attempt on his goal. That was until 10 minutes into the second half.

He charged out of his goal to meet an overhit through ball but instead of clearing passed it straight to Faroe Islands U21 forward Steffan Lokin.

Lokin took a touch before firing a low driven shot from distance into the open net that Meslier had left behind.

The 21-year-old and centre-back Loic Bade sprinted to try and reach the ball but were not quick enough as it rolled into the goal.

France went on to finish the game with 72% possession and 30 goal attempts but couldn't find another goal in response to Meslier's blunder.

That meant the minnows took a surprise draw in the 2023 Euro U21 qualification group.

Meslier was making just his third appearances for his country's under-21 side after progressing through the youth ranks in recent years.

He's been extremely impressive for Leeds in the Premier League despite his young age having been made first choice upon their return from the Championship.

He joined initially on loan in 2019 from French side Lorient before the move was made permanent in 2020 and he's not looked back since.

The error should be a learning curve in the young player's career and serve him well for his future with club and country.
