Keep calm and carry on! Leicester star James Maddison urges fans of old side Norwich to be patient as they continue to adapt to life in the Premier League
- Norwich managed to salvage a draw in their most recent game against Leicester
- Foxes star James Maddison came from Canaries and urged fans to stay patient
- Leicester fans need a bit of that too after their impressive run was halted
- The mood was deflated on Saturday but Brendan Rodgers has been incredible
Be patient was James Maddison’s advice to his former club, with the benefit of his own experiences, as Norwich continue to adapt to life in the Premier League.
Leicester could do worse than step back and adopt a similarly calm approach following their morale-sapping setback against the Canaries.
The mood around the King Power Stadium was deflated as Leicester’s relentless form was brought to a halt by Daniel Farke’s side. Judging by Brendan Rodgers’ post-match comments it was equally flat in the home dressing room.
James Maddison used to play for Norwich and came up against them on Saturday afternoon
Eight successive league wins had lifted Leicester into pole position to challenge runaway leaders Liverpool.
It would be a mammoth task to get even close to Jurgen Klopp’s side, though if there is one club that has earned the right to believe in the seemingly impossible it is Leicester, unforgettable 5000-1 title winners in 2016.
Rodgers’ pre-match comments about the importance of being ready to pounce on any Liverpool slip hinted at the growing sense that perhaps another fairy tale is not beyond reason.
With Liverpool now off on Club World Cup duty, Leicester kicked off against Norwich with the opportunity to slash the Reds’ lead to five points before the two sides meet at the King Power on Boxing Day.
But Norwich impressively dashed those hopes, nipping any Leicester optimism in the bud.
Here, though, is where perspective is needed. That Leicester are even where they are right now is remarkable.
Brendan Rodgers has turned Leicester into a real force but there was deflation post-Norwich
Rodgers inherited a club that were 12th in February and a top-six challenge was the expectation this season.
Instead, it would now be more of a surprise if they are not back in the Champions League again next term.
He has also made Leicester believe again and quickly formed them into a side that look capable of repeating some of the highs Claudio Ranieri’s crop enjoyed.
Maybe not the ultimate high of a historic Premier League title win, but at least being a force to be reckoned with at the top end of the table and playing European football.
Leicester fans need to also be patient and understand that Rodgers has done an amazing job
Rodgers said: ‘We’re a team that’s been developing over this last nine, 10 months from a mid-table position and now people are talking about challenging for titles. So for us our feet are very firmly on the ground and the players have been absolutely amazing.’
There was, though, a nervousness ahead of Norwich’s visit, with Rodgers admitting he felt the game was a ‘dangerous one’.
His fears proved well founded as Leicester needed Tim Krul’s own goal to cancel out Teemu Pukki’s opener and some last-ditch second-half defending to prevent the Finland striker scoring again.
Teemu Pukki scored again to salvage a draw for Norwich, who are in for a real relegation battle
Second-bottom Norwich certainly did enough to impress their former star Maddison.
He said: ‘Be patient, you always have to be patient, if I was sending a message to Norwich fans that’s what I’d say.
‘Norwich are a good team. I really like the way they’re playing and I’m not just saying that because I played for them. They should be higher in the table than they are. They have good players, hopefully the quality they have means they will stay up.’
