Liverpool are on the verge of completing a deal for Bayern Munch midfielder Thiago Alcantara, reports say.
The midfielder has repeatedly been linked with a switch to Liverpool this summer after doing a U-turn on his decision to pen a new deal with Bayern.
Thiago has less than a year left on his current deal, but Liverpool were initially unwilling to meet Bayern’s asking price.
But the Athletic claim Liverpool have now agreed a fee worth in the region of £27million with the Bundesliga champions.
Talks between the clubs were at a standstill and Liverpool were reportedly preparing to return to the table in the final week of the transfer window.
But negotiations accelerated on Monday after Bayern told Liverpool they wanted the transfer to be finalised before the start of the Bundesliga season.
Bayern kick off their season against Schalke on Friday and Liverpool will now move to agree personal terms with Thiago.
Liverpool are not anticipating any issues with Thiago’s wage demands and the deal will be a massive boost for the reigning Premier League champions.
Thiago, 29, has been a major target for Liverpool after it emerged he did not intend to sign a contract extension at Bayern.
The Spain international saw his stock soar again during the summer as Bayern won the Champions League in impressive fashion.
Jurgen Klopp was keen to land Thiago, but was understanding of Liverpool’s financial difficulties amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Thiago will become Liverpool’s second signing this summer after the addition of left-back Kostas Tsimikas.
Klopp would also like further cover at centre-back and in attack, but Liverpool are expected to wait for asking prices to drop before doing any more business.
