Liverpool fans defend Konate after Man Utd supporters savage new signing’s debut

Liverpool's latest signing, former RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate, had a tough start to life in a Reds shirt during Jurgen Klopp's side opening set of pre-season fixtures.

In an unconventional move, instead of simply playing one normal match, Liverpool played two 30 minute games back-to-back against Austrian outfit Wacker Innsbruck and Bundesliga side Stuttgart.

They drew both contests 1-1, with goals from Divock Origi in game one before Sadio Mane notching in game two for Klopp's men.

The fixtures also provided the chance for the Liverpool faithful to get their first glimpse of summer signing Konate, who displayed a bit of off-season rust after a summer with limited football.

Konate's spirits were high after the game, telling Liverpool's official website: "Yes, I am very happy.

"It’s an unforgettable moment for me. Yes, without our fans – but I am very, very happy. Just a little bit sad – very sad – because we didn’t win. But it’s OK, I’m happy."

However, the game presented Man Utd fans with the chance to ridicule Liverpool's latest recruit on social media.

One United fan, @_rashfordfc, was quick to criticise the 22-year-old's performance on his debut, taking to twitter to claim: "He played awful."

Another United fan, as made obvious his @ – MARTIALFCCC, opted for the more short and simple put down, simply asking "who?" in response to an image of the centre-back.

Not to be outdone by their rivals, Liverpool fans responded in emphatic fashion, leaping to the defence of their new defender by lavishing him in praise.

Reds fans @rels8k wrote: "I love you ibrahima please help Liverpool win league", while @Callum_Moran "Solid debut. Looks so good on the ball as well"

Konate set Liverpool back £36m after the Reds triggered his release clause back in May, the Frenchman purchased after Liverpool endured a centre-back injury crisis last term, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all spending lengthy spells on the side-lines.
