Liverpool get Pellegrini boost but Tielemans set-back as Wijnaldum eyes new club

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool are set to spend big in the summer transfer window as they look to battle for the Premier League title after falling away in the previous campaign.

The Reds suffered from poor form at the turn of the year but went 10 games unbeaten to claim a third-placed finish and a Champions League spot on the final day of the season.

Now, Klopp wants to avoid a repeat of the previous 12 months by making shrewd moves in the transfer market.

The Reds are particularly on the hunt for a central midfielder due to the long-term injuries of Naby Kieta and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as well as the departure of Gini Wijnaldum.

Here's the latest from Daily Star Sport on Liverpool's dealings in the transfer market.

Lorenzo Pellegrini

The Reds have reportedly activated the €30 million release clause for AS Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Liverpool are set to raid the Italian side for a third time in five seasons following Mo Salah and Alison Becker arriving upon Merseyside.

Pellegrini is out of contract in 2022 and Roma risk losing out on a transfer fee if they opt not to sell one of their prized possessions.

The 24-year-old netted 11 goals and registered nine assists in all competitions last season and is seen as the perfect replacement for the departing Wijnaldum.

Youri Tielemans

Jurgen Klopp has suffered a set-back in the race to sign Youri Tielemans with any potential deal having to wait till after the Euros.

Journalist Daniel Nelson reports that Liverpool are in talks to sign the Belgian midfielder but are unwilling to match Leicester's valuation.

Tielemans struck the winner in The Foxes 1-0 win against Chelsea in the FA Cup final and has obtained several admirers with Manchester United and Inter Milan rumoured to be monitoring his situation.

With Klopp having to wait until after Euro 2020 to make a move, he may have a fight on his hands if he plans to land the 24-year-old.

Gini Wijnaldum

Former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has signed for PSG on the expiration of his contract according to reports.
