Liverpool held initial talks with Kai Havertz prior to Chelsea record transfer

Liverpool already saw top target Timo Werner end up at Chelsea and it appears as though another new boy at Stamford Bridge was on Jurgen Klopp’s radar. The Reds have only signed Kostas Tsimikas this summer, coming in as cover for Andy Robertson.

Werner as their priority heading into the summer window but that all changed after the coronavirus pandemic.

Liverpool were forced to alter their plans and were unable to meet RB Leipzig’s asking price for the striker.

Chelsea soon swooped in to sign the Germany international and Frank Lampard’s side have carried on their spending spree this summer.

It appears as though Liverpool had similar plans to spend big this summer though on a forward-minded player.

According to Bild journalist Christian Falk, Liverpool contacted Havertz’s representatives over a possible move.

He claims there was never any concrete offer from the Merseyside outfit.

But it’s another player Liverpool had shown some interest in, only to see Chelsea end up bringing them both to the Premier League.

“In fact, Liverpool was Timo Werner’s first choice for a long time,” he told Empire of the Kop.

“The reason is: Jurgen Klopp. The coach had convinced him for Liverpool.

“But like now with Thiago: the club bosses did not provide the money for the transfer.

“Lampard was also very convincing. That’s why Werner went to Chelsea in the end.

“As for Havertz, it was never really concrete between him and Liverpool, although the Reds had also shown interest to his advisors.

“At the time, Havertz had FC Barcelona and Real Madrid in mind.

“Corona also forced these two big clubs to save. Chelsea FC had the necessary sporting arguments and the money.”

Liverpool are expected to do some more business before the end of the transfer window.

A centre-back remains a priority to replace Dejan Lovren while reports have suggested Liverpool hold a strong interest in signing Watford star Ismaila Sarr.
