Liverpool ‘pushing hard’ to beat Real Madrid to David Alaba transfer

Transfer update: Latest on Alaba, Elneny and Eriksen

Liverpool are hoping to sign Bayern Munich defender David Alaba despite strong interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid, according to reports. The 28-year-old is now free to find a new club ahead of next season, with his deal at the German champions set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

Liverpool have struggled with a defensive injury crisis in recent months due to the absences of regular starters Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, who are both sidelined with long-term problems.

This has forced Jurgen Klopp into filling round holes with square pegs at times, with midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho being selected to start in central defence for Monday’s defeat at Southampton.

The signing of Alaba, especially on a free transfer, would represent a useful coup for the Reds with the experienced Austrian able to provide significant strength in depth at the back.

The Guardian has claimed that Liverpool are ‘pushing hard’ to secure the 28-year-old’s signature before the end of the season, but face stiff competition from Real Madrid.

The report states that the La Liga side are in ‘pole position’ to land Alaba, with the defender’s heart set on a move to the Spanish capital.

Los Blancos are said to have already sounded out the player’s representatives with a view to an agreement.

A long-term contract, said to be in the region of ‘four or five’ years, has been offered.

The club is facing uncertainty over the future of star defender and captain Sergio Ramos, who has been linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu in recent months.

Manchester United and Tottenham have been tipped as potential January destinations for the 34-year-old after negotiations concerning a new deal reportedly reached a stalemate.

With regards to Alaba, Liverpool are also said to have contacted the relevant parties as they aim to tempt the defender to Merseyside, but it is understood that a move to Madrid is the likely outcome.

There is no indication that he will leave Bayern before the end of the month with the six-time Austrian Footballer of the Year happy to see out the rest of the season in Germany.

Despite this, his relationship with the Bavarian club is believed to have deteriorated significantly during the past year.

Alaba explained in December that he believes he has been disrespected by the club amid talks regarding a new deal.

“This respect and the appreciation I was looking for when contract negotiations started have not gone in the right direction,” Alaba told Sky Sport Germany.

“It’s now been a year since then, at a time when the coronavirus was still very far away.”
