Liverpool have been urged to make a surprise double swoop for Chelsea stars N’Golo Kante and Mason Mount. The Reds have endured a dismal start to the Premier League season and are already 15 points behind leaders Arsenal.

Liverpool are said to be tracking Mount, along with Juventus, as the attacker only has 18 months remaining on his Blues contract and is yet to put pen-to-paper on fresh terms. Chelsea don’t want to lose the England international, who has made 181 appearances for them and starred when they defeated Manchester City in the 2021 Champions League final. But they could be tempted to cash in on the 23-year-old if they think they might lose him for free in 2024.

Kante, meanwhile, has been a Premier League star since 2015 and has won the title with Leicester and Chelsea. But he has suffered a string of injury problems in the last couple of years and has failed to have the impact he would have liked at Stamford Bridge in recent times. And the 31-year-old will be free to leave west London next summer if he doesn’t extend his current deal.

Liverpool are in desperate need of reinforcements after their underwhelming start to the campaign. And former Premier League goalkeeper Brad Friedel thinks the Reds should be targeting the Blues duo.

“Mason Mount would do a lot of good for Liverpool,” Friedel told Betway. “It’s a no brainer for [Jurgen] Klopp if it works for both clubs. Mount is an exceptional player and the only time it would be a no brainer for Klopp is if it works financially for Chelsea and Liverpool.

“The player has to want to make the move and the rumour that Klopp wants him has to be true. I think these moves for players, as good as Mount is, only work if everyone is in agreement for it. He’s a very good player and he’d be good for a lot of things for Liverpool.

“Kante could be a superb free option for Liverpool if they can’t get a deal over the line for [Jude] Bellingham or [Frenkie] De Jong – but he’d have to play. If a player like N’Golo Kante comes along on a free then he’s going to have to play. Kante is really good. There’s been some injury issues, sure, but he’s outstanding.

“Klopp knows better than me but I think Kante will have a lot of interested clubs and he’d be an incredible signing for any of them.”
