Liverpool warned Man City have something they don’t in Premier League title claim

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been warned he doesn’t currently have the same attacking freedom in his team that Manchester City have, despite their win over West Ham on Saturday. Alan Curbishley believes the Reds don’t have as many players with the ability to unlock defences from midfield.

Liverpool came from behind to beat West Ham at Anfield on Saturday.

After Pablo Fornals’ early goal, the Reds fought back through a Mohamed Salah penalty before Diogo Jota scored a late goal.

The new signing came off the bench to slot home from close range after a beautiful pass from Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Swiss ace slid the ball through the middle of the West Ham defence right into Jota’s path, leaving him with little to do before passing home.

Liverpool were without Thiago Alcantara in the middle of the pitch, and gave a start to youngster Curtis Jones.

And Curbishley believes that the Reds were worryingly blunt when it came to trying to pierce the Hammers’ defence.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, he warned that Klopp’s side needs to have the same potency as Manchester City do.

Curbishley explained that City have more players – Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva – who are able to cause problems from deep than Liverpool do.

“When they don’t fire, you can’t see anyone else getting the goals for them,” he said.

“I think if he could have another transfer window, that’s what they’re missing.

“That’s where it’s really difficult.

“With Man City you’ve got players like De Bruyne, Silva, who can open up defences.

“When Liverpool are struggling with opening up defences, there aren’t too many players who can unlock a defence.

“Unlike Shaqiri today, though. that was a wonderful pass.”

Liverpool hero John Barnes disagreed with Curbishley, however, and said that when Thiago comes back they’ll have that creative option from midfield.

He did, however, concede that they didn’t have that opnion last year before they signed the Spaniard.

“You do have that option,” Barnes said, referring to Thiago.

“Last year, I don’t think they had that option. Fortunately [for Liverpool] Man City fell away.

“I think last year in the Watford game it became obvious that if the front three don’t perform, they won’t get anything else, but now they’ve solved that problem – apart from Thiago’s injury.”
