Liverpool's Salah and Arsenal's Elneny set for UK return but face isolation

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny will return to the UK on a private jet on Friday after both tested positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Egypt.

Both players had already returned positive tests and were tested again on Thursday, with the same results coming back, reports the Egyptian Football Association.

A statement read: ‘The Egyptian Federation has been in constant contact and coordination with the two clubs since each of them was infected with coronavirus

‘Communication was made through captain Mohamed Fadl, a member of the five-year committee in charge of managing the Federation’s affairs at the administrative level, and Dr. Muhammad Abu Al-Ela, the doctor of the national team at the medical level, while the two players made a new swab for each. Both of them today were positive.’

Both Salah and Elneny will now be tested on arrival back in the UK and face a 10-day isolation period before they can return to their respective squads.

Liverpool play Leicester on Sunday, Atalanta on Wednesday and Brighton on Saturday 28 November, with Salah due to be isolating for all three of those games.

The Gunners are on a similar schedule as they go to Leeds on Sunday, travel to Molde in the Europa League on Thursday and then host Wolves on Sunday 29 November, all of which Elneny is likely to miss.

While neither will play this weekend, they are not completely ruled out of the other upcoming contests as they could be tested again before then and return a negative result.

Salah is another selection headache for Jurgen Klopp, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold all ruled out of the Leicester game, while the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Andy Robertson and Thiago Alcantara may all be fit but have been struggling with injury.
