Uli Hoeness, the former Bayern Munich president, has accused Manchester United and Liverpool of attempting to blackmail the Bundesliga champions over a transfer for Thiago Alcantara.

The English giants have both been linked with the Champions League winning midfielder after he made his desire to leave this summer clear.

Jurgen Klopp is a known admirer of Thiago while the 29-year-old's arrival would be a welcome addition to United's midfield.

Rumours have circulated in recent days that United have agreed terms with the midfielder while Liverpool's pursuit very much depends on Georginio Wijnaldum's future. It seems, though, for now the Dutch midfielder is happy at Anfield and a move there for Thiago is off the cards.

Hoesness is adamant deals have been agreed between the player and the two clubs and as such United and Liverpool are waiting until the final week of the transfer window to submit a small offer.

"It is a difficult situation,” Hoeness told  Sport1. “A while ago [Bayern Munich] agreed on a new four-year contract. Some days later he said: 'I'm looking for a new challenge.' Which is totally okay.

"I think he obviously has an agreement with Liverpool or Manchester United or both of them. Now both clubs are bluffing, and no one has contacted Bayern Munich officially.

“From my point of view, that has no style. They're trying to blackmail us, by waiting until the last week, when they're going to make a cheap offer.

"In that case Bayern have to ask themselves the question: do they want to go along with that or do they tell the player that he has to stay.

“It's going to be a hot three weeks until [the transfer window closes on] October 5.”
