The Manchester United board are said to have told Ralf Rangnick to expect a quiet January transfer window unless a major opportunity presents itself, reports claim. The German interim boss, who replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in late November, is set to continue maximising the use of the club’s current squad while helping the board determine which players deserve to stay at Old Trafford.

Rangnick has already made it clear he intends to improve the team at his disposal as opposed to relying on any potential transfer budget.

United’s squad is currently stacked to the rafters with talent and a number of players are fighting for their futures.

That includes the likes of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani, who are all out of contract at the end of the season.

But the trio are expected to stay this January in a bid to help United make something of their season.

According to ESPN, the United hierarchy are not planning any big moves this winter – unless the right opportunity arises.

Furthermore, any significant changes to the squad are not expected to take place until the end of the season.

That’s when Rangnick is expected to hand over the reins to his replacement as he moves upstairs into a consultancy role.

A defensive midfielder is on the agenda for United though – whether that happens in January or next summer.

The report references that there are three main targets currently under consideration: Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips and Amadou Haidara.

Rangnick has already worked with Haidara during his time at RB Leipzig during the Mali international’s first season in Germany.

Haidara has already spoken out on United’s interest, stating his admiration for some of the club’s former players.

“Everyone had a favourite team as a kid. Mine was Manchester United,” he told Bild.

“I was a big fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, I liked Paul Scholes, Patrice Evra, Edwin van der Sar, Anderson.

“But if you want to talk to me about rumours: I’m at Leipzig and I feel good.”

Meanwhile, West Ham are expected to demand upwards of £80m for their vice-captain Rice.

The England international wants to play Champions League football with Chelsea also interested.
