Manchester United could abandon their search for a new centre-back as a result of Victor Lindelof’s improved recent showings, according to reports. The Red Devils have been linked with a number of potential signings ahead of the summer transfer window, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rumoured to be in the market for a left-sided central defender to partner Harry Maguire at the back.

The likes of Real Madrid star Raphael Varane and Jules Kounde of Sevilla have been tipped to join United in time for next season, with neither Lindelof nor Eric Bailly being able to assert themselves as the obvious first-choice option to line up alongside Maguire.

RB Leipzig youngster Ibrahima Konate and Brighton and Hove Albion’s Ben White have also been mentioned in connection with the Red Devils as of late.

Solskjaer’s side have been less than convincing in defence on a number of occasions this season, with their problems clear for all to see when they blew a two-goal lead to draw with Everton last month.

However, their fortunes at the back have improved in recent weeks, with United conceding just twice from their last six Premier League outings.

Lindelof has played the entire 90 minutes in eight of his side’s last nine league matches, making the most of an extended run in the team with a number of impressive performances.

The Swede’s influence has been so profound that Solskjaer is prepared to end the club’s search for a new centre-back as a result of their defensive success, according to Goal.

The report states that ‘the situation has now changed’ regarding the club’s transfer plans, suggesting that Lindelof’s return to form has sparked a rethink of United’s summer policy.

The 26-year-old was one of the best players on the San Siro pitch on Thursday evening as the Red Devils progressed to the quarter-finals of the Europa League with a hard-fought win over AC Milan.

It was arguably one of his finest nights in a United shirt as he made tackle after interception after clearance, helping to keep a clean sheet that proved crucial in sealing a slender 1-0 win over the Italian giants.

Lindelof’s resurgence appears to have caught the eye of Solskjaer, who has been reaping the rewards of his newly-found confidence in the former Benfica man.

The Norwegian boss sang the praises of his centre-back partnership after Thursday’s game, telling reporters that Lindelof and Maguire’s impressive working relationship has been the key to their recent success.

“Victor and Harry, I thought they played really well last season as well,” he said. “We had so many clean sheets last season as well.

“Victor and Harry have got a good understanding with each other and they’ve really built on last season. Then again, we’ve got other centre-backs who come on and do well when they get the chance.”

Solskjaer continued to hail the performances of United’s entire back four, with Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka also finding form since the turn of the year.

“Every goal you concede at Manchester United is going to be scrutinised, that’s just the way it is,” added Solskjaer.
