Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer failed to mastermind a victory over Leicester on Sunday. His Red Devils side were dumped out of the FA Cup on a chastening afternoon by Brendan Rodgers’ side. And it means their hopes of a cup double now lie in ruin.

United went into the match against Leicester on a high after beating AC Milan 1-0 in the Europa League in midweek.

That saw them sail through to the quarter-finals of the competition, where a relatively comfortable tie against Granada lies in wait.

But United couldn’t make it two cup triumphs on the trot against Leicester on Sunday.

Kelechi Iheanacho, formerly of Manchester City, bagged a brace.

And Youri Tielemans also struck, with United only able to respond through Mason Greenwood.

Solskjaer made some big mistakes himself on the day, but his players were particularly dire. Express Sport will now take a look at four players who badly let him down at the King Power Stadium.

Harry Maguire

It wasn’t happy return to Leicester for Harry Maguire, who endured a nightmare day at the office.

The England international deserves credit for being solid of late, helping his side keep six clean sheets from their last seven matches before the contest.

But, amid the heat of the battle, Maguire toiled.

Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy both exploited his lack of pace and his questionable pass to Fred allowed the former Manchester City star to open the scoring.

Maguire looked pretty miffed throughout the match and will need to bounce back if he’s to skipper the side to a second-placed finish and Europa League triumph.

Alex Telles

Alex Telles enjoyed a magnificent debut against Paris Saint-Germain upon signing from Porto earlier in the season.

Yet, after watching him against Leicester, it’s evident why he’s stuck firmly behind Luke Shaw in Solskjaer’s pecking order.

The Brazil international looked shaky at the back, misjudging his tackles and appearing low on sharpness.

And it was no surprise to see him come off with United needing a goal.

Telles’ offensive play is still his best attribute but he’s hardly set Old Trafford alight since his arrival.

Fred

Fred has had some stinkers since he signed for United back in the summer transfer window of 2018.

But this may have just been his worst performance of the lot.

It was his dreadful pass back to Dean Henderson that led to Leicester taking the lead, with Iheanacho gobbling up the opportunity.

And he was easily outmuscled and outran by the likes of Tielemans and Wilfred Ndidi in the middle of the park.

Fred has definitely improved for United, but there’s still plenty of work to do.

Anthony Martial

United want to sign Erling Haaland in the summer transfer window.

And that’s because they know they can’t trust Anthony Martial in the No 9 role, with the France international flat at the King Power Stadium.

Moved to the left wing to accommodate goalscorer Mason Greenwood, Martial looked low on confidence and was easily shackled by the Foxes’ defence.

Martial has been at the club since 2015.

And time is running out if he’s to ever live up to his full potential.
