Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to make two further additions to Raphael Varane, according to reports. United finally secured a deal to sign Jadon Sancho on Thursday, announcing they had agreed a £73million fee with Borussia Dortmund. But the Red Devils’ transfer business seems to be far from over in this window.

Real Madrid defender Varane is a top target for United.

Varane’s contract at Real expires at the end of next season and the La Liga giants do not want to risk losing him for nothing.

Solskjaer wants Varane to become the central defender partner for club captain Harry Maguire.

But United are yet to agree a fee with Real, who reportedly want between £42.9m (€50m) and £51.5m (€60m) for the France international.

And speaking on Reach PLC’s Transfer Window podcast, Duncan Castles claims Solskjaer wants to also sign a midfielder and a right-back before the end of the summer.

Castles said: “They have Sancho secured with Dortmund, apart from fine details, and ready to start pre-season as soon as he can after England’s European Championship campaign.

“Solskjaer’s been provided with an incredible degree of attacking resource.

“He’s been provided with a huge amount of money to improve in defence.

“He has a midfield where a player like Donny van de Beek, who was wanted by Real Madrid, is barely used last season.

“[He] still wants other reinforcements in midfield and right-back as well.

“If you have all of that, I think there has to be an obligation on Solskjaer’s part to deliver silverware finally and end that trophy drought that he’s presided over during his time at the club.”

Meanwhile, former Tottenham goalkeeper Kasey Keller is not sure if the arrivals of Sancho and Varane will be enough for United to be title contenders.

Keller told ESPN FC: “I’m not sure. I’m not sure if [Edinson] Cavani can score the goals they need.

“He’s done great coming in but I still see him probably in his situation being that secondary striker to play, come off the bench.

“Obviously there was talk potentially of a Harry Kane or something like that, or even doing a double deal with Sancho to bring in Erling Haaland as well. I could see that more.

“I think [Marcus] Rashford has to have a better season, [Paul] Pogba has to be more motivated than he’s shown in a Manchester United shirt.

“If he shows the same motivation that he does for France, for Manchester United, potentially [they can win the league].

“And then obviously [David] De Gea needs to get back to his form of a couple of years ago.”
