Manchester United may have a free run at trying to sign Dayot Upamecano as early as January, according to reports. The French centre-back has long been tipped for a bright future having broken into first-team football at a young age.
United have been tracking Upamecano since 2015 when he joined Red Bull Salzburg.
It wasn’t long until RB Leipzig brought him in from their sister team and the 22-year-old has helped the German side become a perennial Champions League team.
This past summer saw Upamecano attract more attention in the transfer market.
But Leipzig moved quickly to quell any speculation by tying him down to a new contract.

However, they included a new release clause said to be worth £36million which would be activated next year.
That’s indicated that a move away from Leipzig is inevitable with a number of clubs interested in the defender.
United have been considered the favourites for his signature, but Bayern Munich have recently been strongly linked.
The reigning Bundesliga champions are set to lose both David Alaba and Jerome Boateng next year and are in desperate need of reinforcements.

However, Bild report that Upamecano’s release clause is currently too expensive for Bayern.
And it is claimed that offers from the Premier League to sign Upamecano are expected in January.
Liverpool have also been strongly linked with Upamecano this season, partly due to the injury crisis at Anfield.
Both Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk face length spells on the sidelines while Fabinho and Joel Matip have only recently recovered from injuries of their own.
Despite the injury concerns, reports have suggested that Liverpool aren’t currently looking to sign anyone in January.
That leaves the window open for United to make a move for Upamecano in January to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the defender he desperately wanted in the summer.
Solskjaer made it clear that he wanted a new centre-back at Old Trafford to line up alongside Harry Maguire, but the club failed to bring anyone in.
