Senior Manchester United officials are concerned they are suffering the consequences of David De Gea’s status as the club’s highest earner as Dean Henderson’s frustrations grow over the goalkeeping situation at the club.

Henderson will seek to leave United this summer if he is not trusted to become the Red Devils’ first-choice keeper from next season and is not prepared to carry on as De Gea’s understudy.

The 23-year-old impressed during his two-year loan stay at Sheffield United and had every intention of displacing De Gea between the sticks upon his return.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has trusted Henderson to feature in the majority of cup fixtures this campaign but continues to select De Gea for Premier League encounters.

Many believe the Spanish goalkeeper is approaching the end of his career with United, having seen performances consistently decline since the 2018 World Cup.

Solskjaer has repeatedly defended the 30-year-old after poor displays, most notably at the back end of the 2019/20 campaign after a high-profile mistake in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

“David is the best goalkeeper in the world,” stated Solskjaer.

“He’s conceded two goals in the last seven games he’s played for us. There are a few games against City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton. Two goals in seven games.

“He’s been on a run of not conceding goals. The two goals? The Everton one is a freak one and this one, maybe he can save it, maybe he can’t save it. He makes great saves and wins games for us and I still think he’s the best goalkeeper in the world. He’s not making errors that you see time and time again.”

Henderson’s hopes of becoming United’s number one are far from being over, though, with Solskjaer certainly an admirer of the club’s academy graduate.

“Dean tonight was very solid, good kicking, should have had an assist for Marcus [Rashford], which is another thing we worked on today,” said the Red Devils’ boss following his side’s 4-0 win versus Real Sociedad last week.

“He was clean in his handling, clean with his short passes, a good performance and he is maturing all the time.

“But I have a very, very good goalkeeper in David and he saved us against West Brom so I can’t say to you now. I always speak to the players first before I say who’s not playing, they’ll know.”

United are spending more than £600,000 a week on goalkeepers’ wages but will release Sergio Romero, Joel Pereira and Under-23 keeper Paul Woolston in the summer. Lee Grant, listed as a ‘goalkeeping coach’ for the 3-1 win over Newcastle, could become a full-time member of the coaching staff next season after three years of limited playing time.
