Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may be ready to offer Phil Jones a route back to first-team football thanks to Manchester United's injury crisis.
The Red Devils have confirmed that both regular centre-backs Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane will miss Saturday's game at Leicester City in the Premier League.
Captain Maguire suffered a calf problem in the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa and has subsequently missed matches against Villarreal and Everton.
Despite working on his fitness over the international break, this weekend's clash will come too soon for the England defender.
Alongside Maguire, summer signing Varane sustained a groin muscle injury while away with France and is set to be sidelined for the next few weeks.
It's already been a difficult campaign for United at the back so far. The Red Devils have kept just one clean sheet in all competitions.
Now Solskjaer is set to be without his first-choice defensive partnership leaving two spots up for grabs in Saturday's line-up.
Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof may seem the obvious choice for the Norwegian, but Man Utd's latest statement could suggest Phil Jones may be in for a shock return to the starting 11.

United confirmed on their website that Jones and Marcus Rashford could both be in line for a comeback appearance:
"Phil Jones and Marcus Rashford have both been training with the first-team over the international break following their long-term injuries and the duo could feature against Leicester in our 15:00 BST kick-off at the King Power Stadium on Saturday," reads the statement.
For Jones, a return to the first team has been a long time coming.
The 29-year-old has not played a Premier League match for United since a 2-0 defeat to Burnley in January 2020.
