Man Utd linked with audacious move for former Man City manager Roberto Mancini

Former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has emerged as a shock contender to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United.

Solskjaer is under serious pressure to keep his job at Old Trafford, with United only winning three of their first seven Premier League outings this season and suffering defeats against top-four rivals Tottenham and Arsenal.

Reports suggest Red Devils chiefs are already eyeing up potential replacements for the Norwegian, including ex-Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Another name touted as an option for United is Massimiliano Allegri, who has been out of work since leaving Juventus in 2019.

However, new reports coming out of Tuttosport suggest Pochettino and Allegri are not the only two candidates being lined up to replace Solskjaer.

The Italian newspaper claims ex-City gaffer Mancini is also on United’s radar, which would come as a major surprise given the success he enjoyed with their neighbours.

It is believed the 55-year-old has impressed Old Trafford officials with his recent work as Italy manager, a post he has been in for the last two years.

Mancini has enjoyed a 65 per cent win percentage as Azzurri boss, with his side currently occupying first place in their Nations League group above Netherlands, Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Juventus were reportedly considering bringing him to Turin before opting to appoint Andrea Pirlo as their new manager in the summer.

Nevertheless, Mancini is highly unlikely to walk away from his position as Italy manager with the delayed Euro 2020 tournament and the 2022 World Cup both on the horizon.

Mancini enjoyed great success in his four-year stint at City, first guiding the club to FA Cup glory in his first full campaign as manager.

He then masterminded their famous 2011/12 Premier League title triumph, which saw Sergio Aguero’s dramatic injury-time strike against QPR on the final day of the season hand City their first league crown in 44 years.

But after failing to retain their crown the following year, Mancini was dismissed by Etihad chiefs in 2013.
