Man Utd make transfer U-turn on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top target

Manchester United have cooled their interest in Dayot Upamceno, despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being eager to sign the centre-back.

Upamecano will have a £38milion release clause active in his contract at the end of the season, and is said to be eager to leave RB Leipzig.

The centre-back, 22, was one of United boss Solskjaer’s top targets going into the summer transfer window, but the Red Devils opted against making a bid.

Instead, they brought in left-back Alex Telles, midfielder Donny van de Beek and attackers Facundo Pellistri, Amad Traore and Edinson Cavani.

United are expected to sign a new centre-back once the summer transfer windows at the end of the season, but have reportedly ended their interest in Upamecano.

The Athletic claims United won’t be making a bid for the Leipzig star despite his release clause being active once the window opens.

Instead, the door is now open for Bayern Munich to make a move for the centre-back, with two of theirs set to leave.

The German and European champions will see Jerome Boateng and David Alaba leave at the end of the season, with both out of contracts.

They have been linked in the past, and are reportedly set to go all-out for his signature next summer after freeing up some money on the wage bill.

United are set to move onto other targets, but will still be on the lookout for a new centre-back.

They started this season poorly, and were clearly struggling defensively, with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof both putting in sub-par performances throughout the opening stages of the campaign.

Upamecano himself is said to be eager to get a move arranged as soon as possible, claims The Athletic.

He apparently feels a move will help his chances of playing a bigger role for France in the upcoming World Cup qualifying games in March as well as the European Championships in the summer.

A move in January is still possible for Upamecano, though any interested teams will likely have to pay a high premium due to his release clause not being active until the end of the season.
