Man Utd may need Jadon Sancho to repeat Bruno Fernandes transfer gesture

Manchester United want to sign Jadon Sancho but haggling with Borussia Dortmund will be tricky. The Bundesliga giants want big money to part ways with the England international, who was vital as they finished second in the league table behind Bayern Munich. And they may need Sancho to ask Dortmund to let him go – just like Bruno Fernandes did with Sporting Lisbon in January.

Manchester United think Sancho can be the answer to their right wing woes.

Not since Cristiano Ronaldo have the Red Devils possessed a true threat there, with the club struggling to replace the Portugal international in the 11 years since his move to Real Madrid.

They thought Angel Di Maria would be the answer – but the Argentina international lasted just a year before leaving for Paris Saint-Germain in 2015.

Afterwards United believed Memphis Depay can be their Ronaldo but he lasted just 18 months before being sold by Jose Mourinho.

And, more recently, they landed Alexis Sanchez. The less said about the Chile international’s torrid Old Trafford spell the better.

Now, United are hoping Sancho can succeed where the trio have failed.

But as things stand, any deal for the England international will be tricky to strike. And Dortmund’s huge asking price for their star asset is the reason why.

The Bundesliga side don’t want to just let Sancho go without putting up a fight, particularly their need to raise funds.

And it’s believed that, at present, it will take an eyewatering bid of around £120million in order for United to land a player they first wanted to sign in 2017.

The Red Devils have the money. While the coronavirus crisis has hit everybody United are still in a better position than most other teams on the planet.

Yet they’re mindful of how they’d look spending such a big amount of money on one player at a time where the pandemic continues to affect many around the world.

So United may need a Sancho transfer gesture if they’re to land their man.

In January, when they were hunting Fernandes, they were struggling to agree a fee with Sporting Lisbon. They wanted the midfielder, but not at any price.

Yet what helped their cause was Fernandes himself.

The 25-year-old went to Sporting and asked to leave, making it clear that he’d given and achieved all he could over in his homeland.

And that ultimately helped United, who were able to secure the signing of Fernandes for cheaper than they’d expected – with Sporting caving in.

Now, they may need the same with Sancho.

Dortmund are in a better financial position than Sporting were at the time but they’re still expected to sell their best players nonetheless to help balance the books.

Sancho wants to join United. He feels that, after three years in Germany, now is the perfect time for him to return to England.

And he can speed up his Old Trafford move by asking Dortmund to let him go.

It worked for Fernandes and could work for him, too. But only time will tell as to whether United will be able to sign their top transfer target when the summer window reopens.
