Man Utd set to miss out on Douglas Costa as Jorge Mendes brokers Wolves transfer

Manchester United have reportedly fallen behind Wolves in the race to sign Juventus winger Douglas Costa.

The Brazilian has been linked heavily with a move to Old Trafford over the last two years, although the Red Devils have never made an official approach to acquire his services.

But according to reports, United have identified the Brazilian as a cheaper alternative to Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho.

Italian outletTuttosport , however, claims they're close to being pipped to his signature by Wolves, who are on the lookout for a new attacker following Diogo Jota's move to Liverpool.

Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes is said to be brokering the deal for Nuno Espirito Santo to land the former Bayern Munich man.

Mendes was at the centre of Wolves' latest deal, which saw them sign Nelson Semedo from Barcelona for a fee of £29million.

It's understood new Juventus boss Andrea Pirlo has deemed, Costa, 30, to be surplus to requirements at the Allianz Stadium.

News of Wolves' move for Costa comes a few days after Espirito Santo revealed he intends to further reinforce his squad before the end of the transfer window.

"It is important that we strengthen and that we balance the squad," the Portuguese told Sky Sports on Monday night his side's 3-1 defeat to Manchester City.

"Regarding the players that are not signed, I am sorry, I cannot say too much things. These things are totally clear."

He added: "We must balance the squad. We saw today we had problems.

"We had a solution, but we need more solutions that always make us competitive in the game."

Costa joined Juventus from Bayern in the summer of 2017, initially joining on a loan deal before permanently making the move to Turin the following season.

In 102 appearances for the Old Lady, the former Shakhtar Donetsk ace has scored ten goals and provided 21 assists.
