Manchester United’s summer pursuit of Jadon Sancho is officially underway after they submitted an opening transfer bid. The Red Devils offered in the region of £59.5 million – which was promptly turned down by Borussia Dortmund.

The Bundesliga giants want closer to £90m with bonuses added on. While there is still some way to go before the two clubs agree a deal, it seems likely that both sides will indeed find a resolution over Sancho at some point this summer.

With that in mind, Express Sport takes a look at the shirt numbers Sancho – who currently owns No.7 at Dortmund – could wear when he makes the switch.

The No.7 shirt

Given this is already owned by Edinson Cavani it seems incredibly unlikely Sancho would go for it. But that hasn’t stopped big name signings in the past requesting a number that is already owned.

It’s quite probable Sancho would have been handed the shirt had he signed last summer and even likelier he’ll get the jersey following Cavani’s exit next year.

There’s a chance, if he asks nicely, Cavani would be willing to give the number up for him. Albeit a slim one.

The No.8 shirt

Currently worn by Juan Mata the No.8 shirt could soon be free. The Spaniard’s future is up in the air with United now set to decide if they want to keep him for another year.

Given his lack of playing time this season it seems incredibly likely he will depart Old Trafford, thus freeing up the jersey.

The No.12 shirt

The lowest number that is free. Previously worn by Ben Foster and Chris Smalling it’s not the most appealing of numbers but if going low is Sancho’s thing then 12 is vacant.

The No.13 shirt

Unlucky for some. The 13 jersey currently belongs to Lee Grant, though, like Mata, he too is expected to leave this summer.

It seems to have turned into something of a goalkeeper shirt of late, with Anders Lindegaard wearing the number before Grant.

Go back even further and it was the number owned by club cult hero Park Ji-Sung.

The No.14 shirt

This number technically still belongs to Jesse Lingard. The English playmaker was loaned out to West Ham in January and had an incredible half a season at the London Stadium.

But his future at United is still uncertain. There are rumours that he could be used in a swap deal for Declan Rice. Given Lingard’s impact in East London, he could well become a crucial bargaining tool.

The No.32 shirt

David Beckham wore it at Paris Saint-Germain and it’s a popular number within US Sports too. NBA stars Shaquille O’Neal and Magic Johnson both took on 32 with pride.

It’s certainly alternative and very much vacant at United.

Other vacant shirt numbers: 15,19, 20, 30, 35
