Manchester United’s new £40million signing Donny van de Beek has been compared to club legend Paul Scholes by former goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar due to his goalscoring ability. Van de Beek will make his debut for United on Saturday as the Red Devils start their Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace.
Van de Beek is currently United’s only signing of the summer transfer window.
United forked out £40m to sign him from Ajax, and the midfielder is expected to slot straight into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side for Saturday.
The 23-year-old played in last week’s behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa, and fans are wondering where he will fit into the starting line-up against Palace.
At Ajax, Van de Beek played anywhere through the middle of the pitch, and is comfortable in front of the defence or behind a lone striker.

With Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba both set to start, it seems Van de Beek will likely slot in next to the Frenchman with Fernandes playing further up the pitch.
The Holland international has an eye for goal, providing ten goals and 11 assists across all competitions last season.
And Van der Sar, who watched the midfielder’s development at Ajax in recent years, told United fans to expect the new signing to play in a similar style to Scholes.
Speaking to the MUTV Group Chat, the goalkeeping hero praised the work of Van de Beek, saying he’ll be agreat addition to the side.

Van der Sar said: “I’d compare him a little bit to Scholesy, although Scholesy had a cracker of a shot from 30/40 yards out and that’s not Donny’s strength, but he likes to come into the box and chip in with goals.
“Maybe it’s unfair to compare him to Scholesy actually, but he’s a good lad and I’m sure he’ll be a great addition to the team that Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] is creating for United.
“Of course, we know United already have a couple of great midfield players there so he will find his way in the team and also with the amount of games that top clubs need to play this year in the Premier League and Champions League and the cup matches, everything is quite intense so you need a good, wide squad and I think the midfield looks okay at the moment for United.”
Van der Sar also claimed the midfielder’s best position would be deeper in front of the defence, where he is expected to play. He predicted that Van de Beek has spoken to Solskjaer about where he can play and has determined that he will be a box-to-box midfielder.

Van der Sar continued: “He can play in different positions in midfield – he can be a six or an eight or a 10, he has a great eye for a goal.
“His technique is brilliant, he can go box to box.
“I presume he’s had a talk with Ole and they’ve talked about different positions [he can play].
“He’s multi-functional, he can play a little bit deeper which I think is his preferred role.”
