Manchester City missed the chance to go top of the Women’s Super League as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Reading at the Academy Stadium.
Georgia Stanway had fired City ahead with a wonderful strike from nearly 30 yards in the 33rd minute. Reading could only half clear a cross and when it fell to Stanway she hit a fizzing half-volley which curled away from the goalkeeper.
But Reading threatened early in the second half, and after Gemma Bonner scrambled Fara Williams’ shot off the line seconds after the restart, Jade Moore brought them level with a powerful header from a corner.
City pushed for a late winner but Tessa Wullaert’s 90th minute effort came back off the crossbar to ensure Reading a share of the points and a significant boost to confidence following last week’s 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal.
City go level on points with Arsenal, although the Gunners have two games in hand.
