Mane admits he’s still texting one Liverpool star despite joining Bayern Munich

Sadio Mane says he's still messaging Mo Salah despite quitting Liverpool for Bayern Munich last month.

The Senegal international pipped his former team-mate to the African Player of the Year award this week, five months after scoring the winning penalty against Salah's Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Mane insisted that although they've spent the last few years tussling for the limelight at both club and international level, the two players were actually as thick as thieves.

"People sometimes say there's a rivalry between me and [Salah], but you know I don't see myself having a rivalry with any player to be honest," Mane told Goal.

"We have good relations, we text each other. I think the media always try to [aggravate] things. You know I don't just have [relationships] with one player, but with every player I've played with in the world."

"You can ask whoever you want in the club, or wherever I go. I have good relationships with all players."

Mane and Salah formed a formidable on-field partnership for Liverpool since first lining up alongside one another in 2017, but rumours of behind-the-scenes discontent between the pair have been swirling for years, especially since Mane was seen berating Salah for not passing him the ball during a game against Burnley in 2019.

They netted over 270 goals between them on Merseyside and guided the club to multiple major honours, including the Champions League and Liverpool's first ever Premier League title.

Whether rivalry was what motivated them or not almost doesn't matter. The fact is, they were both spellbindingly brilliant during their five seasons together, and that's all anyone will remember.
