Maniac who killed mum with hammer thought he was Man Utd’s ‘official journalist’

A hammer maniac who killed his mum was living a bizarre fantasy existence as Manchester United ’s “official club journalist”.

Robert Child left home each day in a suit and tie, clutching a briefcase.

He told neighbours he was off to United’s training ground or Old Trafford stadium to pen reports on superstars like Paul Pogba.

But in reality he was a penniless, workshy loner.

Child’s neighbours in Childwall, Liverpool, spoke after he was jailed for at least 29 years for battering mum Janice to death.

One said: “I saw him every morning saying he was off to Man United. He’d hop into his Jaguar with the personalised plate RBZ. His mum believed every word. She went to her grave thinking he was a big shot at one of the world’s top clubs. It’s bizarre.”

Another said: “He was a Jackanory, always telling tales that you could not believe. He put it all on.”

And a third called him an “odd bloke” who often played Iron Maiden records backwards.

Liverpool Crown Court was told how Child, 37, inflicted 31 blows to the face and neck of doting Janice, 64.

Child, who was £46,000 in debt, then transferred £25,000 from her bank account to his – and the next day bought a second Jag for £15,000.

He denied killing Janice for financial gain, but Judge Dennis Watson QC rejected his account and said Child did “whatever was necessary to gain access to the money he needed”.

Judge Watson said Child’s motive was “his realisation that without her money his fantasy lifestyle would collapse”. The day before the murder he had just £1.01 in his account.

One of Janice’s neighbours said: “She adored Robert. He was her only child and she would do anything for him. He was everything to her but in the end she was nothing to him.”
