Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from the England squad for Euro 2020 this summer in order to recover from injury – handing Gareth Southgate a dilemma.
The 19-year-old has been named in the 33-man provisional squad, and was expected to make the final 26 which will be named later today.
Greenwood found form at the end of the season following a tricky start to the campaign, during which he was sent home from England duty for breaking coronavirus quarantine guidelines in Iceland.
Southgate will now have to shuffle his options ahead of the 1pm announcement, which could see the likes of Ollie Watkins grab a tournament place.
An official statement from United reads: "Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from the provisional England Euro 2020 squad, in order to recover fully from an underlying injury that also kept him out of the Under-21 European Championship in March.
"Mason’s club appearances were managed carefully to maintain his availability through the intensive 2020/21 Premier League and Europa League schedules.
"But a further spell of tournament football would not be beneficial and Mason will remain at Manchester United to recuperate and prepare for pre-season training."
Southgate said of Greenwood last week: “In terms of the past, that’s absolutely the past. I spoke with Mason before we selected him for the Under-21s in March to make that clear.
"I hope his inclusion on this provisional list shows we’re happy to select him, when young people make mistakes we move on from it, it was the same with Phil [Foden].
“He’s an absolutely outstanding finisher, there’s no question of that. He’s another very young player, his all-round game is still coming together but he’s clearly got an exceptional talent for finishing and that’s why we picked him in September."

Solskjaer said of Greenwood earlier this month: “We spoke before the Liverpool game – that was going to be his 100th game and we said, let's score a winner, for example, and that is what he does – he scores goals.
“He has really added the link up play. He is so clever and he is so clean in his build up play. He is giving assists and his decision making is one thing.
"Of course, if he is going to be wide right or if he is going to be a centre forward, it is the filling out and getting used to having players in your back, facing the wrong way.
"Because if you are going to be a number nine then you are going to get hurt."
