Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly told close friends that he is desperate to return to the Premier League, and the top job at Manchester United recently became available after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked. The Red Devils have faltered with a hugely talented squad this campaign, making them an enticing prospect for an incoming manager, although Solskjaer’s permanent replacement may not be confirmed until the end of the season.

A humiliating afternoon at Vicarage Road proved to be the final nail in Solskjaer’s coffin.

Suffering a 2-0 deficit by half time, things went from bad to worse when Harry Maguire was sent off and two late Watford goals added gloss to the score-line.

Sacked by the board hours later, United have no permanent replacement lined up and are believed to be searching for an interim manager until the end of the season.

Michael Carrick is set to remain in charge until a temporary boss is found, while Pochettino has supposedly been pinpointed for the end of the campaign.

According to The Mirror, the former Tottenham manager has told close friends that he is desperate to return to the Premier League.

Furthermore, having been linked multiple times in the past, the Red Devils job in particular is believed to be the one he has his heart set on.

Despite sitting well clear in Ligue 1, things are not entirely rosy for Pochettino at PSG, and his performance will ultimately be judged by Champions League success or failure.

At the end of the campaign, he will have just one year remaining on his contract which should make prising him away from Paris achievable.

Pochettino spent five successful years in charge of Tottenham between 2014 and 2019.

Although he could not guide them to any silverware, he did orchestrate several strong Premier League finishes which saw them regularly compete in Europe.

He also garnered a reputation as a coach who plays exciting football, something deemed important by the United hierarchy and allegedly part of the reason why they hesitated on the appointment of Antonio Conte.

Pochettino supposedly has admirers at United, and club hero Gary Neville believes that if the opportunity came along, he would be there in a flash.

“I think Mauricio Pochettino – although he’d never say it – he’d leave to come to Man United on a five-year deal tomorrow,” he told Sky Sports.

“He’d look at that group of players, he’d look at the club and he’d realise he’d probably be able to achieve more than he wants at Man United in terms of a project.

“At PSG you are on season by season. ‘You’ve got to win the Champions League or you’re out’ type of model. I don’t think that suits Pochettino.

“Manchester United have to make sure they get the next one right. Even if that means being patient for six months to wait for managers to become available at the end of the season.”
