Screenshots showing the new Pro Evolution Soccer 2022's graphics have stunned fans ahead of its release later this year.
Still images of Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale’s game faces have emerged showing stunning work by an independent artist with the help of the game’s completely new engine.
The two players appear eerily realistic in their features, with an extraordinary level of detail visible in their facial hair, eyes, ears, hairstyles and skin.
But while the interpretations appear incredibly life-like and demonstrate how far gaming technology has come, fans are unsure whether Bale’s appearance has been captured as well as the Barcelona captain's.
Both forwards look like carbon copies of their real selves from the side-profile angle, yet fans took issue with Bale’s front image.
The Wales captain’s ears and beard appear accurate but the artist may have gone too excessive with the detailing of his face, with one commenter stating he looks like a “Skyrim character” from the Elder Scrolls series.
Nevertheless Konami have promised ‘more realistic player models and animations, enhanced physics, photorealistic visuals’.

The Japanese entertainment company will likely release the game in autumn on next-generation consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
The beta test for PES 2022 was initially made available on June 24 and lasted until July 8 as a free download.
Konami enjoyed their 25th anniversary of the Pro Evolution Soccer series last year with the launch of PES 2021 last year and will hope the new edition closes the gap on rivals EA Sports and the FIFA series.
PES have in recent years sought to expand their market share by making exclusive deals with clubs like Juventus and Arsenal for licensing, and will continue the trend with Napoli and Atalanta this year.
