Mikel Arteta gets Arsenal transfer budget boost as Pablo Mari exit ‘confirmed’

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reviews the Brighton game

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will have an additional £6million to spend over the summer after Pablo Mari’s move to Monza was made permanent. The Spanish centre-half was due to stay at the club if they avoided relegation and he made a certain number of appearances and both clauses have now been confirmed to make his stay in the Serie A permanent.

Arsenal are tipped to be busy in the transfer market this summer after running out of steam in the final stages of the Premier League title race. The Gunners have been linked with a number of names including Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo but are likely to need some players to leave in order to fund their summer spending.

However, Arteta’s coffers have already been boosted before the window has even swung open with the news that Mari will make his Monza stay permanent. The Evening Standard reports that the clauses to make his loan deal permanent have been met and he will now leave the Emirates with Arsenal set to receive £6m for his services.

Mari was Arteta’s first-ever signing for Arsenal joining the club from Flamengo in January 2020. He made just 22 appearances for the Gunners before moving to Udinese on loan last year before following it up with another loan to Italy with Monza at the start of the season.

The Spaniard has made 28 appearances for his new side this season after recovering from being stabbed in October. He is now set to remain at the club after they secured their Serie A status for another season by achieving a comfortable mid-table finish after being promoted for the first time last season.

Mari is unlikely to be the only player to leave the Emirates over the summer either. Kieran Tierney has been widely linked with a move to Newcastle United while Granit Xhaka has reportedly told the club he would like to pursue a new challenge next season too.

There are likely to be a number of additions as the club tries to get closer to challenging Manchester City. Former captain Patrick Vieira has suggested they will need at least three or four new faces as they look to get where they want to be.

“They will learn from the situation that they are leaving at the moment and that will make them stronger next year,” Vieira told Sky Sports. “Then there are some pieces that they miss on the field because when you’re looking at the back, I think they will need a couple of pieces at centre back, they will need maybe a right back.

“In the midfield, I think there is some really good, quality players, but they will need a bit more of the physicality, and upfront it is important to have those players who are capable of scoring goals.

“If they manage to bring those three or four players into the starting eleven, then I think they will be a step close to Man City.”
