Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has chance to fulfil Man Utd promise after Burnley defeat

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still working to fulfil the promise he made to fans a year ago as his side prepares to face Burnley on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils were beaten 2-0 by Burnley on January 22nd 2020 in a disappointing night at Old Trafford.

Jay Rodriguez and Chris Wood scored the only goals of the game to heap the pressure on Solskjaer, who was tipped to lose his job at the time.

Speaking afterwards, Solskjaer confirmed he wanted a clear-out at Old Trafford and would look to move on players not in his plans.

"We have started a clear-out and now I am going to be answering these questions until it [transfer window] closes. We are working on things,” he said at the time.

Ashley Young was sold to Inter Milan shortly after, with Alexis Sanchez making his move permanently in the following summer.

Solskjaer continued to sell players deep into the summer window, with Chris Smalling and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson both departing.

But other than that, they’ve been unable to shift fringe players as well as they’d have wanted to.

A year on from their defeat against Burnley, they now prepare to face Sean Dyche’s side again and could end up fielding a largely similar side.

Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard were all tipped to depart in the previous window, but all stayed put.

Solskjaer was said to be trying to offload as many unwanted players as possible in order to raise funds for a bid for Jadon Sancho, but United were unable to get a deal over the line.

United are still trying to clear out their fringe players, with Timothy Fosu-Mensah closing in on a £1.5million move to Bayer Leverkusen.

Andreas Pereira is currently out on loan at Italian side Lazio, while Jones has reportedly been eyed up by Newcastle and Burnley.

Lingard is reportedly a target for Inter Milan, as it seems Solskjaer could finally complete the clear-out he discussed a year ago.
