Paul Pogba admits his ‘stupid’ mistake cost Manchester United in their defeat to Arsenal and says he was surprised by the Gunners’ midfield formation.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side slipped to their third defeat in the Premier League this season as Mikel Arteta’s side sealed a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal from the penalty spot was the difference after Pogba fouled Hector Bellerin inside United’s area.
Following the defeat, Pogba blamed himself for his error and admitted that he is ‘not the best defensively in the box’.
‘We know it’s a poor performance. Myself, I cannot give a foul away like this,’ Pogba told BBC Sport.
‘I thought I would touch the ball but I didn’t. and it cost us the goal today with the penalty.
‘I felt like I touched him a bit, I knew I was in the box, I shouldn’t have given a penalty away like that.
‘Maybe I was a bit out of breath because I was running just before and it made me do this stupid mistake.
‘Details made us lose the game today. For sure I will learn from that a lot, I’m not the best defensively in the box, I can work on this, I can always improve and do better.’
Pogba also claims United’s midfield was unable to get the better of Arsenal’s midfield system with Mikel Arteta opting to play a trio of Mohamed Elneny, Thomas Partey and Bukayo Saka.
‘We also need to do more with the ball creating chances,’ said the midfielder.
‘I think maybe we didn’t expect to be man for man, me and Bruno [Fernandes], but after this we can adapt, we have to find a solution but we didn’t.
‘That’s why we weren’t dangerous with the ball. We keep a clean sheet in the first half, like I say, details made the win for Arsenal today, they were in shape, they were waiting for us to make the mistake.
‘We have to do better, the team, myself, it starts with me.’
