‘If we’d signed Ronaldo, we would have won the league!’: Piers Morgan claims Arsenal should’ve signed the Portugal superstar after his Man United exit… and insists the Al-Nassr forward ‘was keen’ to join Mikel Arteta’s side

Piers Morgan has claimed that Arsenal should have signed Cristiano Ronaldo after his Man United exit and even suggested the forward was ‘keen’ for the move.

The Portuguese superstar had a dramatic exit from Old Trafford in January, after falling out with Erik ten Hag and being outcast from the United squad.

It eventually led to him being sold to Saudi Arabian giants Al-Nassr, where he has managed to score 12 goals from 13 games since joining the club.

Despite only scoring three times for United in the 2022-23 campaign, the 38-year-old has proved that he can still be prolific in front of goal, which Morgan highlighted in a post on social media.

The TV personality made claims that Arsenal should have attempted to sign the forward, as he knows how to score goals ‘when it really matters’.

Ronaldo had been ‘keen’ to join Mikel Arteta’s Premier League leaders, according to Morgan

Taking to Twitter, Morgan wrote: ‘Mock all you like, but if we’d signed Ronaldo when he left Utd, until the end of the season – as he was keen to do btw – we would have won the League. He knows how to win major trophies, and how to score goals when it really matters.’

The Gunners had a number of transfer priorities in the January window – including Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk – but ended up signing Jorginho from the Blues and Leandro Trossard from Brighton.

Their title charge has come crumbling down in recent weeks, despite once holding a 12-point lead at the top just seven matches ago.

After three disappointing draws in a row – against Liverpool, West Ham and Southampton – they were trashed 4-1 by title rivals Man City.

Though Gabriel Jesus’ return from injury at the start of March would’ve been a welcome return for Mikel Arteta’s side, his goals have not been enough to maintain their charge.

Ronaldo, on the other hand, managed to score 24 goals from 38 appearances in all competitions during his full season at Man United last year.

His fractured relationship with Erik ten Hag meant his opportunities in this campaign had become limited, resulting in just three goals from 16 appearances before leaving.

However, since moving to Saudi Arabia, the 38-year-old has been in sensational form in front of goal and helped maintain Al-Nassr’s title charge with his 12 goals.

The beginning of the end for Ronaldo at United was kick-started by his dramatic exit during their win over Tottenham in October.

The Portugal forward stormed down the tunnel at Old Trafford in the final minutes of the match, after ten Hag had tried to sub him on in the final moments.

Then, after being reinstated into the squad, he conducted a tell-all interview with Morgan and took aim at United’s hierarchy and structure.
