Paris Saint-Germain remain hopeful of tying Kylian Mbappe down to a new contract despite the 22-year-old’s desire to join Real Madrid on a free transfer. The Spanish giants reportedly lodged a massive £189million bid for Mbappe on deadline day but were unable to tempt his current employers into cashing in.

The forward’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, meaning that he will be able to negotiate a free transfer to Real Madrid from January.

The 13-time European champions are long-term admirers of Mbappe, who scored 42 goals for PSG in all competitions throughout the previous campaign.

He is believed to have already rejected a number of contract offers from the French giants in order to pursue a move to the Bernabeu ahead of next season.

However, PSG are not prepared to give up the chase and are quietly optimistic that Mbappe will extend his stay at the Parc des Princes, according to The Athletic.

The report claims that PSG are willing to be ‘flexible’ in talks with the forward and could propose a short-term contract to protect the value of their prized asset.

A long-term deal may be another option if Mbappe has a change of heart between now and the end of the season.

It is also said that Lionel Messi, Neymar and Achraf Hakimi could play a significant role in deciding the immediate future of their team-mate.

The former sensationally arrived on a free transfer from Barcelona last month and PSG are hoping that his presence will urge Mbappe into a rethink.

Messi is widely expected to feature alongside Neymar at the top of the pitch this season, with club chiefs waiting to see if Mbappe will snub Real Madrid to continue playing with the pair in Paris after a couple of months.

Meanwhile, Hakimi is said to have struck up a friendship with the Frenchman since joining PSG from Inter Milan at the beginning of the summer window.

It remains to be seen whether he will be able to convince Mbappe to stay before Real Madrid inevitably come calling again in January.

PSG director Leonardo recently admitted that Mbappe was keen to leave the club but insisted that any move before Tuesday’s deadline would only happen on their terms.

“Kylian Mbappe wants to join Real Madrid and we will not hold him back,” Leonardo told RMC Sport last month.

“We said no to Madrid’s first offer, but if our conditions are met, we’ll see. We will not hold anyone against his will.

“If Mbappe wants to join Real Madrid, we’ll allow it, but on our conditions. Kylian always promised us that he will not leave for free.

“We made two big offers to Mbappe. We want to prove to him that’s he the centre of the project but not above the project.

“We created a dream this summer, and we will not let anyone destroy it.”
