- Gary Neville claimed Pep Guardiola’s coaching has improved Raheem Sterling
- Sky Sports pundit was comparing the England forward with Anthony Martial
- Sterling took to Instagram on Tuesday to joke about Neville’s comments
- The former Liverpool star has been in superb form under Guardiola’s tutelage
Raheem Sterling has taken a light-hearted dig at Manchester United legend Gary Neville after he claimed the Man City’s star’s superb form was down to Pep Guardiola.
Sterling has become an integral part of the champions’ starting XI over the last 15 months and scored 23 goals in all competitions as they romped to the Premier League title and the Carabao Cup last season.
His performances have earned rave reviews, with Neville using him as an example for Anthony Martial to follow as he dissected the Frenchman during Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show.

‘Look at Raheem Sterling, who I don’t think has Martial’s talent, and his transformation over the last 12 months and why he is scoring 18, 20 goals a season. That’s the coaching Pep Guardiola has put into him,’ Neville said.
‘They have to invest in him (Martial) and I’m sure they are. Jose Mourinho wants a team that is ready to win the league now and Martial isn’t ready, but he can actually become a top player over the next two, three years, like Sterling has done.’
Sterling, who played the full game as Manchester City beat Tottenham 1-0 on Wednesday night, took to Instagram on Tuesday morning to respond to Neville’s comments.
He wrote: ‘But the transformation on his game in the last twelve months is from coaching!!! The disrespect from G Nev’ followed by four laughing emojis.

It would appear the former Liverpool star is keen to take at least some of the credit for his own improvement, although Guardiola’s influence has been obvious.
Sterling has netted 37 times since the Spaniard arrived at the Etihad in the summer of 2016 and was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award last season.
His performance at Wembley helped City climb back above Liverpool to the top of the table on goal difference, with Riyad Mahrez netting the only goal of the game.
